Everything You Need to Know About Neuromodulators (aka Botox & Xeomin)
What is a neuromodulator?
A neuromodulator weakens the contraction of the treated muscle by interfering with the nerve messengers that tell the muscles to move. There are four types of neuromodulators on the market. At New Image, we offer Botox and Xeomin for our clients.
What is the difference between Botox and Xeomin?
Both Botox and Xeomin contain botulinum toxin type A, are FDA approved and are injected in the same way. The difference is in their formulation. The main difference is that Xeomin contains a “naked” form of botulinum toxin, while Botox contains accessory proteins. Many of our clients are treated with Botox, but we now carry Xeomin as another option. We wanted to give an alternative for those who have had Xeomin previously and prefer it to other neuromodulators on the market. Ask us about the options in your consultation and we can help determine which is the best for you.
Where can you use neuromodulators?
- Around the eyes to treat crow’s feet and frown lines
- The forehead
- The chin to reduce dimples that develop
- Around the lips as a “lip flip” or to reduce gummy smiles
- The marionette area around the mouth
- Underarms to reduce excessive sweating
- In the platysmal bands in the neck
When should you get a neuromodulator treatment?
It’s best to get Botox or Xeomin 5-7 weeks before you want it to take effect. A great time to start Botox is in your 20s/30s before the wrinkles begin to set it. It’s most effective for softening and preventing fine lines and wrinkles. Once the wrinkles become static, it’s more difficult to remove and will require the use of needling or laser treatments.
How long does the treatment take?
Your appointment to receive a neuromodulator treatment (Botox or Xeomin) can be as quick as 15 minutes.
How much will you need?
It’s impossible to know without a consultation. During your consultation with Dr. Madsen and Roxy, they will determine if Xeomin or Botox would be the best choice for you and how many units you will need. A general rule of thumb is one unit for every year you are old, but this varies based on muscle strength and your unique facial structure.
How does the treatment feel?
The needles used for neuromodulator treatments are very small, and, therefore, very comfortable. Most clients say it feels like a tiny pinch or pinprick if they feel anything at all.
How long does a neuromodulator treatment last?
Neuromodulator treatment results start to take effect within 3-7 days after treatment. However, some clients report not seeing effects for up to two weeks after their treatment. Results are typically at their peak effectiveness around 2-6 weeks after. To maintain results, we recommend a treatment every 3-4 months.
What are the side effects?
Side effects are uncommon and not permanent. Some clients experience slight bruising or redness at the injection site. Infrequently, a minor short-term headache may occur.
