Your Top FAQs: Botox, Facial Filler, and Kybella

Having “work” done to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, enhance your lips, or dissolve unwanted fat under your chin is no longer the secret to hide like it once was. But if you’re considering injectable treatments, you likely have a lot of questions. Here are some of the most common ones, answered.

What is the difference between Botox, facial filler, and Kybella?

Botox and filler both address lines and wrinkles, but they do it in different ways. Kybella is used to dissolve fat under the chin.

Botox is best used for fine lines and lines that are only seen when your facial muscles move (think about the lines on your forehead when you raise your eyebrows). Botox temporarily causes muscles to be relaxed so they can’t move, or they move much less. This minimizes some stagnant lines and with regular treatment, prevents lines from deepening. Botox can be injected around the eyes, forehead, and glabellar lines (in between the eyebrows). Results from a Botox treatment typically take 3-5 days and last around 3-4 months.

Facial fillers are used when lines and wrinkles are more prominent and for more significant volume loss (or to make those lips luscious and plump!). When injected, filler provides instant volume and fullness to the area. The results of your filler treatment will last between 6 months and 2 years depending on the type of filler used.

Kybella permanently dissolves fat under the chin. Multiple treatments are usually required to achieve the desired results. After each treatment, there is swelling and tenderness in the area for 5-7 days. Full results are seen 6-8 weeks after treatment.

Can Botox, facial fillers and Kybella be done at the same appointment?

Yes, they can!

Will I bruise? How long will it last? Can you do anything to help reduce a bruise?

Not everyone bruises after injectable treatments but it is possible and usually lasts anywhere from 1 to 7 days. Bruising and swelling is more commonly seen with facial filler treatment and Kybella than Botox treatments. We do carry Alastin’s INhance Post-Injection Serum with TriHex Technology. This product minimizes bruising and swelling that can occur at injection sites and reduces the time needed for the bruise to dissipate. We also can provide a BBL spot shot to speed up the bruise dissipation process.

Are injectables permanent?

Unfortunately, the results achieved from Botox and facial filler are not permanent. The fat that is dissolved as a result of Kybella treatments is permanent.

What if I don’t like the results from my injectable treatment?

Dr. Madsen is a conservative injector, carefully administering Botox in a way that greatly reduces the chance of a negative response. If anything, clients still have a bit of movement in the treated area, in which case a few more units of Botox will be the sweet spot, or a counter injection will relax an overzealous response. The rare response is a heavy brow after treatment. In this scenario we must leave it be and it usually relaxes and lifts some in a couple of weeks.

At New Image, we use facial fillers made with hyaluronic acid (an already occurring substance in the body). These fillers are reversible with injections of an enzyme called hyaluronidase, so you’re never stuck with something you don’t like. Even better, we don’t charge for that follow up treatment if it is needed. One to two week follow ups are scheduled after your injections so we can check your progress and do any necessary tweaking.

The fat that is dissolved during a Kybella treatment is permanent and cannot be reversed. What we most often see is that clients want to see more reduction!

I’m afraid of needles...now what?

We do our best to make sure that you’re comfortable during treatment. We have a cooling machine that we often use that can help distract from the feeling of the injection. 99.9% of our clients that are uncomfortable with needles are amazed when we are done so quickly with their Botox treatment. Filler takes a little more resolve but there is lidocaine in the product, so as the filler goes in you begin to numb in the area making the completion of your treatment easier.

Does filler stretch out your skin permanently?

Fillers administered properly to restore lost volume on the face do not stretch out skin but help bring the plump back that is diminishing with age. As with anything, there is a point, primarily in the lips that can cause excess stretching if more and more filler is used to create larger and larger lips. Too much filler can cause the tissue to lose its elasticity and leave the lip wrinkly if not maintained.
